Core Stability, Flexibility & Strength

Pilates is suitable for a wide range of people targeting the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine which support and stabilise the core of your body, which will enable your body to work more efficiently with a reduced risk of causing injury.

Pilates works on your core stability, flexibility, strength, mobility of the spine, alignment and coordination, resulting in better posture, lower incidence of back and neck pain, lower stress levels, improved respiratory and circulatory systems and it is also good for back and other injury rehabilitation.

The Pilates I teach concentrates on Joseph Pilates 34 key mat based exercises. To start I focus on the basics of correct alignment, neutral spine, breathing, activating the core muscles, movement of joints, balance and generally retraining the body and the mind to become more body aware.

Once the basics are mastered I add resistance and shorten the rest time to make the exercises more challenging. Results in tone and shape typically take around three to six months. If this seems like a long time the important thing to remember is that Pilates is primarily about achieving long-term physical health and wellbeing.

Core Stability
Our focus for May 2024

"The Pilates Method teaches you to be in control of your body and not at its mercy."
Joseph Pilates

Good core stability enables good posture, which will be reflected in the way we walk, play and work.

Pilates is based on putting ourselves into unstable postures and challenging our bodies to stabilise these positions by moving our limbs. Adding small equipment, such as a soft ball, fit ball, weighted balls or foam roller will challenge our stability even more.

All the muscles of the core are strengthened, thereby improving control and alignment.
